What’s On:
18th Biennale of Sydney: all our relations
Artistic Directors: Catherine de Zegher and Gerald McMaster

The 18th Biennale of Sydney, all our relations, intends to focus on inclusionary practices of generative thinking, such as collaboration, conversation and compassion, in the face of coercion and destruction. With the creation of conditions for an encounter in consonance with our surrounding world, this event will bring emphasis to what is already happening at large. Drawing on the possibility of the present, the Biennale will emerge from the engagement of all participants by using a model that begins with two curators in dialogue. This matrix of conversation will extend to both artists and audiences in a multi-vocal correspondence.
All our relations will rely on these various exchanges, affinities and empathies as its dynamic structure – the vascular and cellular structure and sinew of a kind of living, breathing organism – from which the Biennale’s meanings will grow. Artists will work in a context that allows for mutual recognition and audiences from differing backgrounds will be part of this continual development, finding their own direction in these connections. It is in this altered attention to one another – in the meeting and making of ideas together – that constructive consequence can follow.
The 18th Biennale of Sydney will be rooted in storytelling as it is currently being re-imagined as a coming-into-being in relation. In the reciprocity that is storytelling, both teller and listener inhabit the space of the story. Telling stories connects us and allows us to care, to be; it fosters collaboration; it aggregates knowledge and generates new ideas; it ignites change; and, ultimately, builds community. In this matrix, the different projects can be compared to a set of story lines, which artists, curators and audiences relate and translate. Through this process, a collective composition or new Gesamtkunstwerk is accomplished in the active generation of meanings realised by all those who take part, each taking their stories home and beyond ...
Venues include: MCA: Sydney Biennale, Art Gallery of NSW: Sydney Biennale, Art space, Pier 2/3  and Cockatoo Island (free ferry) from circular quay near MCA.

About the Biennale Of Sydney

We are moving on from a century in which the radical in the arts largely adopted principles of separation, negativity and disruption as strategies of change. Where once there was an emphasis on alienation and separation, there is now a renewed attention to how things connect, how we relate to each other and to the world we inhabit.
The 18th Biennale of Sydney: all our relations, curated by Catherine de Zegher and Gerald McMaster, will generate a dynamic new exhibition model to explore the possibilities of this renewed attention. Beginning with two curators in dialogue, all our relations is based on a collaborative framework, allowing conversations to extend to both artists
and audiences.
Through this framework, the exhibition encourages new stories, thoughts and patterns to emerge, as international artists come together to collaborate and create works that relate as if evolving from each other. Artworks unfold in a sequence through the Biennale Art Walk, from the Art Gallery of New South Wales, to the newly redeveloped Museum of Contemporary Art, then Pier 2/3 in Walsh Bay and finally to the world heritage-listed Cockatoo Island.

ARK  - Lyndel Jones
Cockatoo Island   Students to participate in performance.
10.30am  and 2.30pm  24 July.

Lyndal Jones is currently developing a large-scale installation with incidental performances for All Our Relations: Biennale of Sydney, from 27th June – 16th September.
The work, Rehearsing Catastrophe: the Ark in Sydney involves construction of an ark in the Joiners Shed at the highest point of Cockatoo Island (where ships have traditionally been built in Sydney).  It also involves engaging with hundreds of people who will be invited to rehearse, over the 21/2 months of the Biennale, their preparation for managing future disasters.  As only animals are to be accepted on board, those involved in these rehearsals will need to disguise themselves as animals (with long coats and hand luggage) as part of this preparation.  Animal masks (created by Jones) will be provided, along with a short session on the day in some important performance principles to be employed.  The masks, are assemblages of the sorts of materials that might be available from the home. The image is taken from the story of a refugee from the siege of Sarajevo who had to wait in the snow for 6 hours to escape. She had only her hand bag in which she carried everything she could fit to take with her in leaving forever.
REHEARSING CATASTROPHE; THE ARK IN SYDNEY
A work by Lyndal Jones for ‘All Our Relations’, the Biennale of Sydney, 2012
You are invited to join me in presenting this work for the Biennale.
Here is your chance to plan and rehearse for future possible catastrophes.
You are invited to join the queue at the ark any afternoon in complete animal disguise.

Here’s the work:
An ark is being constructed in a shed at the highest point of Cockatoo Island
in preparation for the rising waters forecast to accompany the increasing storms.
The ark, of course, is for animals only.
And only 2 of each animal will be selected when the boat is ready to depart.
Only hand luggage can be taken on board.

Two stories are pertinent here.
One is the story of Noah’s ark… a story of flood and survival through preparation
The other is Milijana’s story. Milijana escaped from the siege of Sarajevo is 1995.
To do so, she was instructed to wait, in the main square with her fake documents,
for a UN transporter to arrive. She was required to stand there, looking nonchalant,
at the risk of capture and death, for 6 hours until the bus arrived. Everything she
could take was in her handbag. It was snowing.

What would you be prepared to do to escape catastrophe? What will you take in your hand luggage?
Animal masks will be supplied. These are all assemblages from around the house. Things you
might put together at the last minute in a desperate attempt to be included.
You will need to bring your hand luggage and a dark, full length coat if you have one. (We can
supply some of these).
You can book individually and join a group or you can come with friends as a group.
No acting is required.
